Southwick

Jonny Booth and Laurie Vella started out in Essex in 2011 with their Pin-Up Beers contract-brewed by Harwich Town Brewery. They began brewing themselves a year later at Stone Cross, Crowborough, East Sussex, decamping with their five-barrel plant in April 2014 to the Chalex Industrial Estate. As for the brewery name, American Second World War bomber planes often had a glamorous ‘pin-up’ woman painted on the fuselage. Many yachts also display such figures, and Jonny and Laurie were once involved in the yachting trade – hence the names of two of their regular beers: Red Head and Honey Brown.

The original Southwick Brewery was formed c. 1790 by a four-man consortium headed by businessman Nathaniel Hall, who sold it in 1820 to Richard Tamplin. On 6 September that year, the thatched brewery burnt down. Uninsured but undeterred, Tamplin arose from the ashes to set up in Brighton as the Phoenix Brewery.
